Application Timeline

Application Opens: June 1st, 2024

Application Due Internally to Mines (optional): Friday, September 6th 2024

Institutional endorsement is optional for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program. If you would like to apply to be considered for endorsement by Mines, reach out to Ashley Weibel as soon as possible and prepare your completed application by the first week of September, annually. To be considered for endorsement, you must submit your complete application (including reference letters) to the Office of Nationally Competitive scholarships by the Internal Deadline. See below section for more details.

Application Due Nationally: October 9, 2pm MT 2024

Applications must be submitted in parallel directly to both the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and a relevant Stanford graduate degree program.

Optional Endorsement Process

KHS does not require applicants to seek endorsements from colleges, universities, or other institutions. An endorsement is an additional letter from the campus in support of your application. Most KHS applicants do not have an endorsement, but they can be helpful in providing more institutional context to explain your success and add another voice in support of your candidacy.

If you would like to be considered for an endorsement from Mines, you must:

  • Submit a complete application, including letters of recommendation to ashley.weibel@mines.edu by the Mines internal deadline listed above
  • Meet with Ashley to discuss your application strategy at least once during your application process, well in advance of the national deadline.
  • Review and sign the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarship’s Applicant Permission Form and Waiver

Endorsement is not automatic. The Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships has to write a full and detailed letter of recommendation for the endorsement and answer very specific questions about you as a person, including supporting anecdotes. It is necessary for us to get to know a student’s personal characteristics and motivations very well to be able to answer the endorsement questions. However, since we have to write and submit the endorsement by the same October deadline as your application materials are due, this cannot be done at the last minute after you finish working — getting to know you deeply must be accomplished while you are preparing your application.
