Award Details

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to outstanding sophomores or juniors who are studying mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering and who intend to pursue a research career. The award provides up to $7,500 per year for a maximum of two years for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and housing expenses.

The Goldwater Scholarship recognizes sophomores and juniors who are committed to pursuing a career in STEM research, and who show the potential to be leaders in their respective fields. During this event, Ashley Weibel, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Research Scholars and Nationally Competitive Scholarships, will provide an overview of the Goldwater Scholarship and discuss how to craft a compelling application. The session also features a panel of previous Mines Goldwater Scholars, including Isaac Pope and Caitlyn Castellion, who will share their firsthand accounts of the application process and the transformative impact of the Goldwater Scholarship on their academic and professional trajectories. Attendees will walk away empowered to take the first steps toward becoming a successful Goldwater applicant.

Application Timeline

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship requires institutional nomination and endorsement. Please contact Ashley Weibel as early as possible to discuss your interest in applying.

Timeline
First Tuesday of September: online application opens; complete pre-application

To be eligible to be nominated by Mines, you must indicate your interest by completing the Pre-Application by mid October. 

October – December: Prepare application, consult with references, seek feedback from our office
December 1st, 2025: Mines Campus deadline 
January: Mines selects four nominees (Mines may nominate a fifth student if we select a transfer student or a U.S. veteran student, and Mines may nominate up to six students if we have both a transfer student and a U.S. Veteran)
Last Friday in January: Nominations due from Mines to the Goldwater Foundation
Last Friday in March: Scholars announced
