Four from Mines Nominated to Compete Nationally for 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship

Colorado School of Mines is pleased to announce that four students have been nominated to represent Mines and compete nationally for the 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Final selection of Goldwater Scholars will be confirmed in spring 2024.  

Katelyn Aasman is a sophomore undergraduate student majoring in Chemical Engineering with a specialty track in Biological Engineering. Katelyn aims to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering in order to lead research and development engineering projects in the biomedical technology industry. Mentors: Richard Holz, Emily Sabo, Christine Morrison  

Ethan Arends is a junior undergraduate student earning a bachelor of science in Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering. Ethan plans to pursue a MD/PhD in Biochemistry with a focus on Immunology in order to become a physician-scientist and lead researcher at the intersection of immunology and aging. Mentors: Stephen Decker, Venkat Subramanian.

Katie Mann is a junior undergraduate student studying Engineering Physics. Katie aims to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and to conduct research in biomedical and biomaterials engineering at a national laboratory as a career researcher. Mentors: Dylan Domaille, Jack Haggett 

Cailyn Smith is a junior undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science with a specialty in Robotics and Intelligent Systems. In her career, Cailyn aspires to a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and to perform research and development for space robotic technology. Mentors: Tom Williams, Eric Mayotte, Fred Sarazin 

The Mines nomination committee includes faculty from the Energy and Materials Programs: Ramya Kumar from Chemical and Biological Engineering; Annalise Maughan from Chemistry; Aashutosh Mistry from Mechanical Engineering, Emmanuel De Moor from Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Daniel Adams from Physics. Student advising and nominations were coordinated by Ashley Weibel in the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships.  

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation serves as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
